Meet a sailor: Patrick Gasperz
Ship: Downbeat – Archambault A35
After being shipless for a year and another year of not sailing due to covid Patrick is back at it this year with his “new” Archambault A35 named Downbeat. Towards the end of summer a little retrospective of his season so far and the plans for the rest of the year.
This is my first season at our new marine, Marina Muiderzand, a great marina with a fanatic sailing club and dito Wednesday evening club competition. Up till now we participated in 10 out of the 13 race’s and it’s definitely great fun! Every now and then we get stuck in some weeds, just like most of the other competitors. However we also got some good results with a 3th place finish as our highest position so far. Just a few more races to go and we are looking for a strong finish of the competition.
Besides some casual cruising and the club competition I wanted to compete in some bigger events. So we started the endurance race “Ronde om Noord-Holland” dual handed. This was a major high and low in one. We were off to a good start and managed to do fairly well considering we had little experience racing Downbeat dual handed. However when the evening came so came the thunder, heavy rain and big wind gusts. With forecasts predicting this weather would continue well into the night, we decided to make the call and retire half way into the race. At the moment it felt a little bit like failing myself as a sailor. Although we were not the only ones as just 40 out of the 160 competitors finished the race. Now looking back, I think it was good seamanship to make this decision and to stay safe.
With three more races in the club competition to go we are looking to improve our best result so far and finish strong. With the completion of the club competition Downbeat will sail to the Grevelingenmeer to join the winter competition there. Great stuff and looking forward to seeing how Downbeat will perform as we get to know her better and better!
